Aiding Refugees from the Crisis in Ukraine
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has created a massive humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, four million refugees have been displaced. These men, women, and children are in need of food, water, shelter, and medical care, including cancer care. Although the countries surrounding Ukraine have begun to provide aid, the rapid influx of refugees is straining each country’s capacity to provide adequate care. It is the duty of the global community to provide what aid it can to help those who have lost homes, possessions, and family members.

COA’S CARES MISSION, HERE & ABROAD
The Community Oncology Alliance’s (COA) mission is advocating for community oncology patients and practices. We meet with policymakers and industry experts to protect community oncology, the preferred treatment setting for American patients with cancer, and promote high-quality, affordable care.
While COA’s primary focus remains within the United States and its territories, we recognize that extraordinary circumstances like war and natural disasters require the assistance of the global community. That is why we are asking our members to rally around the Ukrainian refugee community.
How We Can Help
COA Cares Humanitarian Aid Committee has identified four independent organizations providing direct aid to those affected by the war in Ukraine. These organizations complement the mission and values of COA, have stellar reputations for charitable aid, and provide a direct conduit to helping those affected by this terrible injustice.
*Donations to these organizations are 100% tax deductible and will be earmarked to specific Ukraine relief efforts.*
AMERICARES
To address the conflict in Ukraine, Americares is deploying an emergency response team in Krakow, Poland to support health services for families affected. There they will be coordinating large-scale shipments of medicine and relief supplies and mobilizing emergency medical teams in crisis situations. Already they have three tons of critical medicine and medical supplies on the way to an organization working inside Ukraine, for hospitals and responders there.
DIRECT RELIEF
Direct Relief is working directly with Ukraine’s Ministry of Health and other on-the-ground partners to provide urgently needed medical aid, including emergency response packs intended for first responders, oxygen concentrators, critical care medicines, and much more. So far, Direct Relief has provided over 200 tons of medical aid.
DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS
Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is stepping up its medical humanitarian response to the crisis in Ukraine and in neighboring countries and is mobilizing to launch emergency operations. There are teams in Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia, Russia and Belarus who are independent and impartial and committed to providing medical humanitarian assistance to people affected by war no matter who they are or where they are. MSF has been in contact with Ukrainian hospitals treating trauma patients wounded in fighting, many of which are experiencing supply shortages. As their efforts continue, they will focus on ensuring the right medical supplies get to the right hospitals in a timely fashion.
INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CORPS
International Medical Corps (IMC) is on the ground in Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, and Romania to provide aid to Ukrainians still inside their country and those displaced to neighboring countries. IMC is working with state health agencies and local partners to provide primary and emergency services, mental health and psychosocial support, gender-based violence services, and medicines and critical supplies to provide care and prevent the spread of COVID-19 among displaced populations and caregivers.
