State-Level Advocacy Is Critical
State engagement is critical to protect patients with cancer and community oncology practices. While federal policy often receives the most attention, state legislation and regulations can address some of the biggest challenges facing cancer care today, including pharmacy benefit manager abuses, health insurance access, drug costs, and more.
Approximately 20% of all state bills pass, compared to 1-4% in U.S. Congress, making states a prime setting to continue momentum for community oncology.
A State Legislative Leadership Program Designed for You
COA State Retreat
Community oncology practice representatives convene for a two-day policy bootcamp, learning the ins and outs of state government, the policy making process, and regulatory bodies. Participants leave equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully begin state-level advocacy. Sessions are led by COA staff and government professionals.
COA Delegations at State Lawmaker Meetings
State Retreat graduates are invited to join COA delegations at national meetings throughout the year—including with the National Conference of State Legislatures, the National Conference of Insurance Legislators, and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners—where participants establish relationships with key policymakers. These events are an important opportunity to engage in meaningful policy conversations well in advance of state legislative sessions.
COA Government Relations Support
Ongoing support from COA’s state policy team helps Legislative Leadership Program participants and practices continue advocating for cancer care in their state. Exclusive resources, connections with lawmakers, policy intelligence, and advocacy opportunities put participants at the center of policy and ensure they remain informed and engaged. Many contribute to testimony during state hearings and engage in statewide coalition efforts.
