Patti LaBelle Wants You to Get Screened for Cancer
The Godmother of Soul Joins the ‘Time to Screen’ Campaign
Music icon Patti LaBelle has partnered with COA and CancerCare for the ‘Time to Screen‘ campaign to encourage millions of people around the country to get screened for cancer.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused many people to delay or cancel their annual cancer screenings in order to stay safe. Now, Ms. LaBelle is urging them to get back into the screening routine with PSAs airing all over the country.
“I’ve learned timing is everything in life and right now, it’s time to take control of your health,” said LaBelle. “I know what it’s like to lose loved ones far too early to cancer. Don’t wait until it’s too late. I tell everyone, ‘Honey, it’s time to get screened.’”

COA Submits Amicus Brief in PCMA v. Wehbi
Supreme Court Case is New Frontier in War with PBMs
Earlier this month, COA joined with the Alliance for Transparent and Affordable Prescriptions and American Pharmacies to submit an amicus curiae brief in the Supreme Court case Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA) v. Wehbi.
In December 2020, the Supreme Court ruled in Rutledge v. (PCMA) that states have the ability to regulate pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), specifically ruling that an Arkansas law regulating PBMs did not violate ERISA. Now, PBMs are challenging a similar law in North Dakota. In recent years, states have revived the mantle “laboratory of democracy,” taking action to regulate these shadowy middlemen and protect their citizens. COA is proud to support these state efforts and anticipates a positive result from this case.

ASCO and COA Release New Oncology Medical Home (OMH) Standards
Revised Standards are the Foundation of New Pilot Program
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and COA have released revamped standards for the OMH model. These standards provide a comprehensive roadmap for oncology practices to deliver high-quality, evidence-based cancer care.
Compared to the previous standards, the new ones help practices gather more data to analyze against the expanded criteria of the revamped model. In the coming months, a two-year pilot program will begin to test the efficiency and usefulness of the new standards.

Get to Know Your Oncology Care Team: Oncology Nurses
On August 11 at 12 p.m. ET, the CPAN Advocacy Chat series is taking a deep dive into the oncology care team. We’ll be featuring oncology nurses, whose hard work and dedication keep the care team running.
Rose Gerber, COA director of patient advocacy and education, will talk to Brenda McGarr, RN. With more than 17 years in the field, Brenda has experience in many areas, operating as an oncology nurse navigator, inpatient nurse, case manager, and other positions. Additionally, Brenda is the CPAN Chapter Leader for Augusta Oncology, working with passionate advocates to make sure their voice is heard from Atlanta, GA to Washington, D.C.

Recap: The 2021 Community Oncology Advocacy Summit
Connecting Your Story to the Big Picture
The 2021 Virtual Community Oncology Advocacy Summit was a great success with over 400 registrants! We heard from policy, communications, and treatment experts from around the field.
Personal experience is a powerful reminder. Summit attendees learned how to use their stories as the basis for change at the state and federal level, and how to connect with advocates across the country. We’re excited to see how attendees use what they learned to create a better cancer care system.
