Aiding Refugees from the Crisis in Ukraine

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has created a massive humanitarian crisis. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, four million refugees have been displaced. These men, women, and children are in need of food, water, shelter, and medical care, including cancer care. Although the countries surrounding Ukraine have begun to provide aid, the rapid influx of refugees is straining each country’s capacity to provide adequate care. It is the duty of the global community to provide what aid it can to help those who have lost homes, possessions, and family members.

COA’S CARES MISSION, HERE & ABROAD

The Community Oncology Alliance’s (COA) mission is advocating for community oncology patients and practices. We meet with policymakers and industry experts to protect community oncology, the preferred treatment setting for American patients with cancer, and promote high-quality, affordable care.

While COA’s primary focus remains within the United States and its territories, we recognize that extraordinary circumstances like war and natural disasters require the assistance of the global community. That is why we are asking our members to rally around the Ukrainian refugee community.

How We Can Help

COA Cares Humanitarian Aid Committee has identified four independent organizations providing direct aid to those affected by the war in Ukraine. These organizations complement the mission and values of COA, have stellar reputations for charitable aid, and provide a direct conduit to helping those affected by this terrible injustice.

*Donations to these organizations are 100% tax deductible and will be earmarked to specific Ukraine relief efforts.*

To address the conflict in Ukraine, Americares is deploying an emergency response team in Krakow, Poland to support health services for families affected. There they will be coordinating large-scale shipments of medicine and relief supplies and mobilizing emergency medical teams in crisis situations. About COA Cares:
Humanitarian Aid
Committee

In response to the recurring number of crises and our members’ desire to provide targeted aid to emerging issues, COA has formed a standing Humanitarian Aid Committee to direct the organizations responses. The committee currently has nine members drawn from community oncology:

  • Stephen “Fred” Divers, MD, Genesis Cancer & Blood Institute and American Oncology Network, Hot Springs, AR
  • Lucio Gordan, MD, Co-Chair, Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute, Gainesville, FL
  • Richard Ingram, MD, Shenandoah Oncology, Winchester, VA
  • Mary Kruczynski
    Community Oncology Alliance
    Washington, DC
  • Alti Rahman, MHA, MBA, CSSBB, Oncology Consultants, Houston, TX
  • Fred Schnell, MD, FACP, Co-Chair, Cancer Center of Middle Georgia, Community Oncology Alliance, Chief Medical Officer, Dublin, GA
  • Iuliana Shapira, MD, Regional Cancer Care Associates, New Hyde Park, NY
  • Mark Thompson, MD, Co-Chair, Community Oncology Alliance, Medical Director of Public Policy, Washington, DC
  • Emily Touloukian, DO, Coastal Cancer Center, Myrtle Beach, SC
  • Drew Lovejoy, Community Oncology Alliance, Senior Communications Manager, Washington, DC

While COA’s primary focus remains within the United States and its territories, we recognize that extraordinary circumstances like war, natural disasters, and famine require the assistance of the global community. As the leading representative of community oncology in the United States, it is our responsibility to assist our global neighbors during times of crisis.

Charities are put forth by Committee members and then vetted using various watchdog organizations such as the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, CharityWatch, and GuideStar. Charities are chosen on an individual basis according to their appropriateness for the given crisis and track record in that area.

It has become abundantly clear over the past few years that humanitarian crises are, unfortunately, becoming more frequent. Support is needed and will very likely be required at multiple points in the future. The timing of this initiative is in no way intended to minimize prior world events or crises but aims to ease current and future suffering.

In order to remain impartial and dedicated to its original purpose, the Committee does not accept solicitations.
