Mark Thompson, MD

Mark Thompson, MD is the Community Oncology Alliance (COA) medical director of public policy. He guides COA in making official positions and comments regarding public policy. Dr. Thompson brings a deep understanding of complex cancer care issues and policymaking. He is actively involved in COA government affairs work and is regularly in Washington, DC as an advocate for community oncology. In this role, Dr. Thompson monitors legislative affairs that impact the future of cancer care at all levels.

Dr. Thompson has served as the past chair of the COA Strategic Planning Committee, the Payment Reform Committee, and the Radiology and Radiation Committee, and also as secretary and a board member since COA’s founding. He was the president of COA from 2013 –  2014. During his time with COA, Dr. Thompson has made almost 100 trips to Washington, DC to meet with members of Congress, federal agencies, and numerous presidential administrations to discuss health care policy proposals.

Dr. Thompson is a triple board-certified oncologist and received his MD from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. He completed his fellowship in hematology/oncology at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Prior to retiring, Dr. Thompson treated all cancer and blood disorders with a special interest in the treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Thompson is the past medical director and managing partner of The Mark H. Zangmeister Center, having served in this role for more than twenty years.

Dr. Thompson is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Medical Examiners, and the American Board of Internal Medicine-Medical Oncology. He has been a member of multiple advisory committees regarding cancer care and information technologies for Mount Carmel Health Systems and served on its board of trustees from 1995-2001.
